Zuckerberg said: "Twenty-seventeen was a strong year for Facebook, but it was also a hard one. We're doing this by encouraging meaningful connections between people rather than passive consumption of content". He cited the need to "protect our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states" and "making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent".

The company reported fourth quarter revenue of almost $13bn, up 47% from the same period in 2016. On the Q4 2017 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg announced that WhatsApp passed 1.5 billion monthly active users and sees 60 billion messages sent per day.

Those figures were 14% higher than in December 2016, but had increased 16% year-on-year in September. It had 184 million daily users in this region in the quarter, down from 185 million in the prior quarter.

It was another busy three months for the social network.

By promoting local news stories, Facebook will benefit regional publishers that have struggled to reach audiences in the "News Feed".

"Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives", Zuckerberg added. This is an attempt to make the information on the News Feeds more relevant to the users as well as to help spread "news that is trustworthy, informative, and local".
