This map shows the earthquake was centred in South Wales with people reporting tremors in Cardiff Newport and Swansea

This natural disaster has been felt across a large area of Wales and England with the furthest reports so far from Birmingham and Devon.

The quake struck at approximately 2.30pm today. The most serious tremors are believed to have been felt in South Wales area.

The epicenter was located about 20km - 12 miles - north-north-east of Swansea, said the British Geological Survey.

Although small earthquakes in the United Kingdom are not uncommon, the British Geological Survey said historically quakes above a 5-point magnitude on the Richter scale occur about every decade.

Many took to Twitter to share their experiences as well.


Port Talbot's Twitter account reported: "Temporary stop in play".

Gareth Rhys, who was in Cardiff when the quake hit, said the "whole room shook".

One Lancastrian, Emmy Bell, took to Twitter to say her auto was rocking in Asda vehicle park in Deepdale.

Closer to the epicentre, James Leonard tweeted: "Wow was that an natural disaster in Swansea my house just shook". "We hoped that you had a surprisingly "earth moving" experience!"
