So much for a warm welcome for Alex Smith in Washington

So much for a warm welcome for Alex Smith in Washington

Late in the evening, Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star broke the news that the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins for Washington's third-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft and cornerback Kendall Fuller. The teams can't make the trade official under the new league year starts on March 14. Because of the leaguewide interest in the Chiefs quarterback, Washington handsomely overpaid Kansas City for the right to then overpay Smith through age 38. Under the agreement in principle, Smith, who had one year remaining on his contract with Kansas City, will sign a four-year contract extension.

Cousins played under the franchise tag the last two seasons in D.C. and was set to become a free agent this off-season. Smith will receive $71 million guaranteed.

What are your thoughts on Smith being traded to the Washington Redskins and his time in Kansas City being up? There are a number of teams desperate for quarterbacks this offseason, and the favourites are likely to be the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos.

Perhaps decent quarterbacks will continue to elude the Cleveland Browns until the end of time.

Of the teams who draft in front of the Packers this year - the Browns (twice), Giants, Colts, Broncos, Jets, Buccaneers, Bears, Raiders, 49ers, Dolphins, Bengals and Redskins - only a handful have needs at quarterback. If they don't, then there is nearly no way that Dorsey skips picking a quarterback with the No. 1 overall selection.

After having been franchise tagged by Washington in each of the past two offseasons, it now appears Cousins will indeed hit the free agent market, where the QB-needy Browns are expected to be a suitor.

All eyes will now turn to the future of Kirk Cousins over the coming months as a host of teams queue up for the services of a man who has passed 4000 yards for the past three seasons. Once Cousins decided not to counter that offer, the Redskins put out a statement - hoping to let the other players and fans know what they had offered.

The deal also clears the way for 2017 first-round draft pick Patrick Mahomes to become the Chiefs' new starting quarterback.

At 10:23 p.m. ET, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that the Chiefs would be getting a third-round pick in the deal and an "unidentified" player. One NFC scout predicted Smith and Gruden would be a good pairing.

There are rumblings that Jacksonville will bring back Blake Bortles on his $19 million fifth-year option, but wouldn't they be better off with Cousins? He had one year remaining on his contract with a salary cap charge of $20.6 million. And this, particularly with so many teams in need of a signal-caller this offseason, shakes up what we think will happen in the 2018 NFL Draft.
