Bollywood actor Sridevi passes away at age 54

25 February 2018, 01:48 | Conrad Doyle

Bollywood's legendary leading lady Sridevi Kapoor dies of heart attack at age of 54

She was in Dubai to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah's wedding where she reportedly had a cardiac arrest.

Boney Kapoor's brother, actor-turned-producer Sanjay Kapoor, told Indian Express: "Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away".

Well-wishers are speeding to Sridevi's house in Mumbai to be by her elder daughter Janhvi's side who couldn't be in Dubai due to her shooting schedule.

Sridevi soon became a leading actor in the south and Hindi films and was known for her ability to act, dance as well as comic timing.

Sridevi voted as India's greatest actress of all time in a CNN-IBN poll of 2013 has several domestic and global awards tucked under her belt. She made her debut in 1978 with "Solva Sawan".

It is a Black Day in Bollywood with her sudden death. She acted with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and many more superstars but always held her own on screen. Since then the star has never looked back with several box office hits notably Mr India (1987), Lamhe (1991) and Judai (1997). She took a 15-year hiatus beginning in 1997, but returned in 2012 with the blockbuster "English Vinglish".

However, news about her death came quite late in the night, and much before it was out in the media, twitterati started sharing the information, stating that it was rumour.

She was awarded India's fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri, in 2013, for her services to Indian cinema. Our condolences go out to the Kapoor family and especially her daughters, who will no doubt miss their mother who was very close to them and supporting their careers.
