Two dead and 50 injured in US passenger and freight train collision

BREAKING NEWS: Two dead and 50 passengers are injured as Amtrak train smashes into freight carriages in South Carolina

An Amtrak train traveling from NY to Miami crashed with a freight train in SC early Sunday, killing two people and injuring 116 others.

McMaster identified the dead as Amtrak personnel, and said the freight train, which was stationary, appeared to have been empty. Last month, Chao told railroad industry officials that they are expected to meet the deadline to have the systems installed by the end of this year.

"We are cooperating fully with the NTSB, which is leading the investigation, as well as working with FRA and CSX", Amtrak said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has announced that it will conduct an investigation into the cause of the accident.

- March 14, 2016: An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed in southwest Kansas, sending five cars off the tracks and injuring at least 32 people.

Sumwalt said the crash could have been avoided if positive train control - a system that combines GPS, wireless radio and computers to monitor trains and stop them from colliding, derailing or speeding - had been in place.

Amtrak has equipped 49% of its locomotives and 67% of its tracks with PTC, according to Federal Railroad Administration data from the second quarter of 2017. Local and Lexington County responders were the first to the scene, but they are pulling back as other agencies investigate. Kempf was from Savannah, George, and Cella from Orange Park, Florida, Fisher said.

He says their early into their probe, and they're just trying to collect any evidence that they could lose immediately. "They are very distraught, very shocked as anybody would be in this situation". Due to crash the engine as well as a few wagons of the passenger train were derailed causing fractures, broken bones and bruises to more than 70 of its passengers.

A passenger on the train, Carl Bishop, spoke with WXIA, AND says he and his wife were in a sleeping vehicle at the time of the crash. "When it was happening, it was quick".

"As you and your loved ones gather at church and other houses of worship today, we ask that you pray for those affected and the families of those who have passed away", he said on Twitter.

That isn't the case for the next auto, which was violently bent in half, jutting off the track while still relatively connected to the cars in front and to the rear of it.

"Nobody was panicking", Pettaway said. And 116 people were taken to four hospitals, according to the governor. After he was released from the hospital, he reunited with his wife at a makeshift shelter at a school near where the train crash occurred. The passenger train was traveling between NY and Miami, Amtrak said in a statement, when it "came in contact with a CSX freight train at around 2:35 a.m".

There were eight crew members and approximately 139 passengers on board. "More information will be provided as available".
