That means a user can now ask Alexa to send a message to one of their smartphone contacts, and the assistant can route it through SMS or its own proprietary messaging platform. On Tuesday, the company announced that it is launching a new messaging feature for Alexa devices that will allow you to send SMS texts to your friends and other contacts using your voice. Amazon, for its part, recently updated the Alexa app for Android with voice controls, and on Tuesday rolled out support for SMS messaging.

You can still tell Alexa to "send a message" but if you do that, it will try and send it via the Alexa app first. Select "Contacts", then "My Profile".

To enable Alexa to deliver text messages to smartphones via Amazon Echo devices, you need to perform an initial setup process.

NSW commuters are to become the latest beneficiaries of voice-based interaction thanks to a new Transport for NSW integration with Amazon's Alexa platform. Needless to say, Rebel, Cardi, Gordon, and Anthony all fail at being Alexa. You can make phone calls to other Echo devices or most regular phone numbers in Canada, the USA and Mexico.

Ask Alexa to send a message to their number.

We'd be surprised if it stayed as a USA exclusive feature, but given that Apple is due to release its own smart speaker (the HomePod) to the market in the coming weeks, it's possible that the feature won't come to iOS, as Apple may offer an iMessage alternative.

"In NSW, we know transport is no longer just about building infrastructure and running services, but embracing new technology to provide the best services for our customers". The caveat here is that the feature worked only when the caller and the receiver had Echo devices.

It is available in the United States at launch.
