This is the third US school shooting in just over a week; a 15-year-old boy in Kentucky killed two and wounded 14 on January 23, the day after a 16-year-old boy wounded one girl in Texas. The boy was listed in critical condition with a shot to the temple.
Jocelyn Lopez told KLTA that her younger sister, a 13-year-old seventh grader, was in the classroom where the shooting occurred.
Shortly after the beginning of the first class of the day at Sal Castro Middle School, gunfires were heard in a classroom.
Belmont Senior High School is a public high school located at 1575 West 2nd Street in the Westlake community of Los Angeles, California.
The girl, whose name has not been revealed because of her age, has been charged with negligent discharge of a firearm that left five people injured, including two students who sustained gunshot wounds.
The LAPD responded to a 911 call made at 8.55am local time, following reports of shots fired at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles. Three other people had minor face or head injuries, some from broken glass, but weren't shot, officials said.
Police arrested a female student suspect and recovered a gun. A 15-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the wrist was taken to a hospital in fair condition, Scott said.
At an informal presentation of good-attendance certificates last month, Principal Erick Mitchell said his campus was becoming a destination for families who wanted a smaller school setting.
LA middle and high schools use metal-detector wands to search students daily for weapons.
"She said, "If I give you the gun will you hide it for me?'" he said".
Television news footage showed officers leading a girl with dark hair away in handcuffs following the shooting on Thursday in a classroom at Castro Middle School. "I had the gun in my backpack and I didn't know it was loaded and my backpack fell and the gun went off, '" he said.
As news of the incident spread, anxious parents flocked to the campus, eager to reunite with their children.
School police Sgt. Edward BernaltoldKTLA that the "situation is under control", and that the suspect has been taken into custody.

One of the parents spoke to CBS San Francisco and said that she was anxious about her 13-year old son as the authorities did not allow the parents to approach the school after the incident.
