Trump Calls For DACA Fix, Still Wants Wall

Trump opens curtain on negotiations over spending bill, immigration

The problem is that Democrats are "slow walking" the negotiations, trying to force Republicans to accept a deal that would legalize 800,000 children of illegal aliens eligible for the DACA program.

In order to protect those under DACA, however, Trump shared three goals he expects the upcoming bill to accomplish: enhancing border security, ending chain migration, and eradicating the visa lottery system.

Congress must pass spending legislation by January 19 to prevent a federal shutdown.

President Trump blasted America's "broken" and "unfair" court system Wednesday, just hours after a federal judge blocked the administration from turning back the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which shielded more than 700,000 people from deportation.

Those who seek permanent status would have to follow existing pathways, such as marrying a US citizen or having a company sponsor an immigrant visa.

"You need the wall". President Donald Trump told reporters Monday during a bipartisan meeting on DACA that a bill to be introduced by Goodlatte would be a "bill of love".

Lawmakers also consider him a more rational negotiating partner than White House senior adviser Stephen Miller, who has ruled on Trump immigration policy.

"In a matter of days, we can come together and reach an agreement", Minority Whip Sen. "The parents that we presume they brought them here that we're not talking about now, they don't wanna deport them either". "We take care of that, and we also take care of security".

Republicans charge that Democrats have all but halted talks on spending caps until there is a resolution on DACA, which gives undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children a chance to stay, work or study in the United States without fear of deportation.

The wall now represents a complicated political question for Republicans and Democrats. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) on whether a border wall was a precondition for any DACA fix.

But despite that initial promise seen in Kelly, lawmakers have since felt a series of disheartening decisions has changed that calculus - including the decision to end DACA while he was chief of staff and a series of decisions to end Temporary Protected Status by the administration since - including reporting that he was involved in calling acting Secretary Elaine Duke and pressuring her on the Honduras TPS decision, which Duke later denied. "These are good kids and we should want to help them to develop their God-given potentials, to keep their families together and to make their own contribution to the American dream". How can the GOP give Trump a win on the wall without alienating Democrats from a bipartisan solution on DACA?

"If those things are in place when the DACA recipients get their benefits, I think most of these members would have ample cover", Mehlman said. "And then we can go to comprehensive (immigration reform) later on".
