Rural State Activists Seek to Form 51st State

'New California' declares its independence from the rest of state in secession bid
Activists want to divide up California and form a 51st state.
The founders have even created their own "Declaration of Independence" for the state, which can be read in full online. Several counties in Northern California ceremonially seceded one day a week.
Previously, proposals to split the state of California have included the effort to divide the state into six, others have suggested combining parts of the state with OR to create the new state of Jefferson. To do that, they invoked Article 4, Section 3 of the US Constitution, which says that new states can only be formed with the consent of the existing states.
The proposed state would mostly consist of the state's rural counties, while the urban areas along the Pacific coast would remain part of California. California is a Democratic stronghold, with the party holding 80 of the state's 120 legislative seats. "Coastal elites" are increasingly alienated from much of the country, while recent Hollywood and media scandals have eroded their moral credibility.
Preston said Californians supportive of the initiative believe the state's governing system is "entirely broken", in part because the Republican Party is nearly "entirely irrelevant in California". Their area, which is predominately conservative and Republican, wants to separate from the other areas that are predominately brown and liberal.
After the 2016 elections, a Calexit movement, advocating that California secede from the Union, was briefly trending on social media before losing traction when Californians realized leaving the USA would require adding a new Amendment to the Constitution, a hard task few were willing to volunteer their time towards.
The group is still calling on other counties to add their names to the new state, so there is still a chance its proposed area could grow.
