North Korea to send 22 athletes to Winter Games

The IOC says that the Korean athletes will compete in the Pyeongchang Olympics and both Korean teams will march together in the opening ceremony.

"The US, in collusion with Canada, created the scene of war simulation by summoning the foreign ministers' meeting of the countries participated in the Korean War", Xinhua quoted an official from the North Korean Foreign Ministry as saying.

The number of Russian athletes eligible to take part at next month's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang has been reduced from a pool of 500 to 389, the International Olympic Committee said on Friday.

The upcoming Olympics, which are the 23rd Winter Games, will take place in South Korea's PyeongChang on February 9-25, 2018.

The delegation will compete in three sports and five disciplines.

The IOC approves the request of the NOCs of ROK and DPRK to have their delegations marching together as one under the name "Korea" at the Opening Ceremony.

The two Koreas will march under a unified Korea flag, and will field a joint women's ice hockey team.

Special exemptions were made to the tournament quotas to allow North Korean participation.

Ms Hyon Song Wol, leader of the North's all-female Moranbong Band, was supposed to lead the delegation on the two-day trip. North Korea reportedly suspended talks. The remaining candidates will be cleared to participate if they pass additional screening such as "further pre-Games tests and reanalysis from stored samples", the International Olympic Committee said.

The two sides also agreed to pursue closer inter-Korean ties and exchange as well as hold military talks to defuse tension on the peninsula.

"The Olympic Games show us what the world could look like, if we were all guided by the Olympic spirit of respect and understanding".

SPORT is often described as a trivial, largely inconsequential pastime - but could it play an important role in easing friction between North and South Korea? North Korea agreed to send a 140-member art troupe, including an orchestra, singers and dancers, for concerts in Seoul and Gangnueng during next month's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

North Korea has been working on an operational ballistic missile submarine, which when completed and coupled with missiles developed using this barge platform, will provide a second leg to North Korea's nuclear deterrent enterprise - or offer a submersible platform from which to launch a first strike.
