Reports filtering in from South Africa revealed that the executive of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) met on Saturday to outline the party's programme for the coming year and one of the party's resolution for 2018 is to force Zuma out of office.

"We have not arrived at the decision that Zuma must go, or Zuma must not go", ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule told a news conference on the outcome of a four-day ANC meeting that ended on Sunday.

Bloomberg market analyst Robert Brand also remained positive on the currency, stating that it was possible for Ramaphosa to continue the rally by continuing to clamp down on corrupt state-owned enterprises such as Eskom, and possibly even move away from some of the ANC's more populist ideas (such as land reform) so as to encourage continued foreign investment.

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba's comments come amid speculation that Jacob Zuma could be shown the door soon. "The longer Zuma stays, the more people will lose confidence in the new leadership of the ANC", sources said. He, not Zuma, is leading South Africa's delegation to the World Economic Forum gathering in Davos this week.

Zuma's public diary indicates that he would deliver the state of the nation address on February 8. "We had said there would be continuous interaction between President Zuma and (ANC) President Ramaphosa", Magashule said. The ANC, which has ruled since 1994 when Nelson Mandela won the first multi-racial election, recorded its worst-ever results in 2016 local polls.

Authorities said last week they had been granted authority to freeze millions of dollars worth of assets belonging to companies controlled by the Gupta brothers, who are friends of Zuma's.

Yesterday, Zuma's office released a statement that gave an indication that the state president was going nowhere.
