Tourists travelling to Cape Town, South Africa have been warned to keep water usage to a minimum, as it has been estimated that the city's water reserves could run out as early as 18 March.

The measures follow nearly three years of water shortages, Cape Town's rainfall dams are sitting at 27 percent full.

As things stand, Day Zero is projected to occur on 12 April - moved forward from the previous estimation of 21 April 2018.

If water runs out, Cape Town will be the first city in the developed world to experience such a catastrophic event.

Tourists traveling to Cape Town these days may have to select between experiencing one of the most lovely towns in the world or taking a shower.

From February 1, residents will only be allowed to use 50 liters, or a little over 13 gallons, of water per person, per day and this isn't going to be an easy transition.

Mayor Patricia de Lille implemented a water rationing regime late a year ago that required residents to cut use to about 13 gallons a day.

"It is quite unbelievable that a majority of people do not seem to care and are sending all of us headlong towards Day Zero". But she warned on January 18: "Despite our urging for months‚ 60% of residents are callously using more than the 23 gallons per day". And that is not pointing fingers or bickering, just stating a fact because number one: "we are already putting in a desalinator at the Waterfront. and it will be producing two megalitres of water in itself", she said.

Visitors have been instructed to take short, two-minute showers, flush toilets as rarely as possible and stay in accommodation that has water-saving procedures in place.

Every day that consumption exceeded 500m litres, the last day of normal water supply drew closer, he said.

Queues are forming at natural springs around Cape Town as residents seek to minimise mains usage and build up emergency supplies of water.

"No amount of politicking and scapegoats will do away with the imminent water blackout we face in the Western Cape if we fail to act responsibly", Mokonyane said.

Zille's spokesperson Michael Mpofu said the strategy plan included the deployment of forces at the various points of distribution across the metro, regular patrols, and the escorting of water resources to critical points where necessary.
