More on the life of John Young, an 'astronauts' astronaut'

Astronaut John Young, a pioneer of the USA space program with six spacewalks and a landing on the moon, died at the age of 87, NASA announced Saturday.

Over the course of his career he flew into space six times in the Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.

A former Navy test pilot, Young became an astronaut in 1962.

"Astronaut John Young's storied career spanned three generations of spaceflight; we will stand on his shoulders as we look toward the next human frontier". A memo he had sent three weeks earlier, leaked to the media after the tragedy, criticised Nasa for compromising protection to meet launch schedules.

"Earth's geologic history is pretty clear: It says, quite frankly, that single-planet species don't last", Young said, according to a 2004 Houston Chronicle story.

Legendary astronaut John Young died Saturday. Young said later that launching the space shuttle always scared him more than it thrilled him because so much could go wrong. He flew on the first manned flight of the Gemini spacecraft in 1965 (and led a flight in 1966), traveled to the Moon twice (including a moonwalk during Apollo 16) and played a key role in the rescue of Apollo 13 by helping to stretch out its resources. In his autobiography, he said he felt responsible for the loss of the shuttles Columbia and Challenger because his crews were on board.

It was the safety measures put in place after the fire that got 12 men, Mr Young included, safely to the moon and back.

Young was born in San Francisco and grew up in Orlando. He became interested early on in aviation and earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952.

News of his death prompted tributes, including from fellow astronauts who called him a "hero" and "astronauts' astronaut", and from former President George H.W. Bush. He retired at the end of 2004. From there, he joined the US Navy, served aboard the USS LAWS during the Korean War, and went on to attend the Navy Test Pilot School.

"To us, he represented the best in the American spirit - always looking forward, always reaching higher", Bush said in a statement. "May his memory serve to inspire future generations of explorers to dare greatly, act boldly, and serve selflessly".
