McConnell blasts Schumer for blocking spending bill over DACA

President Donald Trump points at a sign that reads

Eighteen senators, including members of both parties, were opposed.

"Unfortunately, we can not answer your call today because Congressional Democrats are holding government funding, including funding for our troops and other national security priorities, hostage to an unrelated immigration debate", the message said.

It is unclear whether Senate Democrats will stay together on spinning this development. McConnell said he intends to bring up free-standing immigration legislation in February.

A key reason why the White House has not agreed to a deal that would reopen the federal government is that West Wing officials are insisting on almost all of their demands for clamping down on the nation's immigration system, sources inside the White House and Capitol Hill said. "They blinked", principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah told CNN. "They don't want to do it but are powerless!"

Notably, numerous Democrats who voted against the agreement included a litany of potential 2020 presidential candidates including Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Elizabeth Warren. House Speaker Paul Ryan said Sunday that the House will accept a short-term funding deal that would fund the government through February 8, should it be passed by the Senate.

The Senate voted shortly after noon Monday to advance a spending bill that would fund the government for three weeks. If not, he said "it would be my intention to take up legislation" addressing those issues.

The McConnell concession is similar to the proposal by a group of roughly 20 Senators, which includes liberal Republicans and several Democrats facing red-state voters in November.

"I'm willing to seal the deal, to sit and work right now with the president or anyone he designates - let's get it done", Schumer said.

Although essential services such as air traffic control are operating, many federal departments were offically shut down at midnight on Friday after USA lawmakers failed to reach a deal on a spending bill that would have kept government offices open temporarily.

Republicans have appeared increasingly confident that Democrats would bear the brunt of criticism for the shutdown.

Schumer said he would continue to talk to McConnell, but the two leaders apparently decided further discussions Sunday evening would not yield a successful vote after midnight. On Monday, he accused Democrats of prioritizing services and security for noncitizens over US citizens.

"That's a lot of leverage", Flake said.

Trump moved to undercut Democrats, saying he would only accept a comprehensive immigration reform - one that notably addresses his demands for a border wall with Mexico as well as the fate of the "Dreamers". "They don't want to do it but are powerless!"

Name SearchWatch Service' David Kustoff of Germantown terms it the "Schumer Shutdown" - a reference to Democratic U.S. Senate Leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

Republicans and Democrats showed no signs of ending their stand-off over immigration and spending yesterday, as Americans woke up to a government shutdown.

Tennessee's other Republican Senator, Bob Corker, had not yet issued any statement on the shutdown by late Saturday afternoon.

The Senate action is expected to pass in the House, although House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, said at a morning news conference, "There will be a large number of our members who won't support it".

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pushing back against President Donald Trump's calls to end Senate filibusters.

"With shifting stances and with the finger pointing coming from Trump on Twitter, it remains to be seen when and if a compromise to reopen the federal government will occur", she said.
