Jon Gruden confirms interest in Raiders job: 'I hope I'm a candidate'

When asked specifically if he is in the running, Gruden said he is hopeful the Raiders want him.

Gruden, 54, coached the Raiders to a 38-26 record over four seasons before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by Al Davis in 2001.

Gruden would be "temped to accept" such an offer from the Raiders but would hesitate to make any decisions until after the team's regular-season finale Sunday, according to ESPN, which has employed Gruden as an analyst since 2009.

Gruden made his most specific comments about the opening in Oakland in an interview Tuesday with the Bay Area News Group. The Raiders seem more likely to keep him around for one more year, not only because they gave him a four-year extension but also to try and prove that this year's disappointment wasn't the norm.

On Monday, the Detroit Lions axed coach Jim Caldwell, who finished the season with a 9-7 record but missed the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Gruden is calling his final game of the season on Saturday, when the Titans and Chiefs meet in the wild-card round.

Jack Del Rio told reporters following the Raiders' 30-10 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers that he had been fired. Rapoport added that Gruden was assembling a coaching staff in anticipation of returning to coaching, one that includes his former QB, Rich Gannon. He was wide receivers coach with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints prior being hired as New York's offensive coordinator last March.

John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance which monitors the NFL's minority hiring, said he is confident the Raiders will follow the rules and doesn't consider the process a sham despite reports Gruden would get the job before it even opened.
