Google Is Now Selling Audiobooks, Which Will Probably Piss Off Amazon

We have some incredible news for you as audiobooks are now offered in Google Play Store.

Greg Hartrell, head of product management for Google Play Books, listed subscription-less buying as the top selling point for the new audiobooks store.

Also, users can start off the morning by listening to an audiobook with the Assistant on their phone, and continue listening with the Google Play Books app on a tablet. Titles will be available on iOS, Android for phones, and on the voice-activated Google Assistant for devices including Google Home.

Announced today, Google Play Audiobooks is now available through Google Play Books. As it turns out, today is the day - Google Play Audiobooks are now official.

Audiobooks can be played through the updated Play Books app for Android and iOS, as well as on the web. According to the banners displayed by the company, google audiobooks will be initially available in selective countries such as the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Although India seems to among the supported countries, the audiobooks page us now coming up empty for me in Google Play, but it may change in the few hours or by the morning.

Hence, Google has gotten into the audiobook business.

Although Google Play audiobooks work most places you'd want, there are some caveats.

To go along with the launch, Google is offering very deep discounts on lots of audiobook titles.

The involvement with Google Assistant brings in some smart features such as the option to set a timer for bedtime reading, so the audio book will only be played for a specific time. It likely will be some time though, before we get the more advanced features of other similar sites like Audible. The introduction of audiobooks at Google Play brings with it an easier way for those in the Google ecosystem to enjoy their favorite reads in a seamless way across devices.

Family sharing. You can share your audiobooks with everyone in your family through Family Library for no additional fee.
