Giving You More Control of Your Privacy on Facebook includes the announcement about the upcoming changes to the privacy center, some tips on managing your data on Facebook, and the company's privacy principles.

"We recognize that people use Facebook to connect, but not everyone wants to share everything with everyone - including with us", wrote Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer in a blog post. The new rules go into effect on May 25. It's important that you have choices when it comes to how your data is used.

For Facebook and other Silicon Valley giants, complying with the GDPR may pose greater costs and require additional resources as their business models rely on the collection and sale of consumer habits online. Facebook, which has 2 billion users, said it will show different videos on different privacy topics throughout the year.

On an inferring note, Facebook believes in the approach that "Improvement is constant" and hints that newer controls and tools will keep on coming in the future for the users. It has also announced plans to make users' core privacy settings easier to find on the website.

As part of the privacy push, Facebook has also begun running short education videos in users' New Feeds that teach users how to delete old posts, explain what happens to user information when an account is deleted, and show how to manage data used for Facebook ads. "Our apps have always been focused on giving people transparency and control, and this gives us a very good foundation to meet all the requirements of the GDPR and to spur us on to continue investing in products and in educational tools to protect privacy", Sandberg said at an event in Brussels last week.

GDPR gives European Union citizens greater protection and control over their data, and significantly increases the fines that can be issued to organisations that break the law. When they get it wrong, their customer base responds.

The GDPR is said to be the largest overhaul of personal data privacy rules since the birth of the internet.

In Europe, Facebook has been the focus of several privacy investigations by government watchdogs in recent years.

This month, Facebook has shared the first two major changes coming to the social media service.
