Sisi replaces head of Egypt's intelligence agency
Egyptian President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi announced on Friday that he is running for a second term in office in the race to kick off in March.
In a video statement published on his official Facebook page, Annan said, "I am determined to submit my candidacy for the post of President of the Republic once I have completed the necessary procedures [pertaining to my position as] former Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, in accordance with military laws and regulations".
In the case that no participant wins a majority vote during the first round of the elections which are set for March 26-28, a runoff will be held on April 24-26.
Other presidential hopefuls include a prominent rights lawyer who has alleged harassment by the authorities. Many of his party's militants and supporters have also been arrested for opposing the current administration. Those who aspire to be candidates should receive support from a minimum of 20 members of Parliament or 25,000 citizens from at least 15 governments with at least 1,000 from each province.
One year later, Sisi became president with 96.91 percent of the votes in elections which were widely criticized by local and worldwide organizations.
Sisi came to prominence when he led the army's ouster of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 - Egypt's first freely elected leader - two years after the downfall of longtime ruler President Hosni Mubarak in the "Arab Spring" uprisings that swept the Middle East.
The campaigning period for the 2018 elections will kickstart on February 24 and end on March 23, state news Al-Ahram reported.
Al-Sisi supporters say the president's harsh measures are needed in order to keep the country stable, as Egypt faces security challenges including attacks by Islamic State militants in the North Sinai region.
Sisi has promised not to run for a third term, but is likely to cruise to a second term given the clampdown on opponents.
In the televised announcement, Sisi listed Egypt's achievements during his first term, including a nascent financial recovery after years of political turmoil and economic instability.
