Now, the National Football League have asked the Panthers to explain their handling of Newton's injury - adding that it has gotten in touch with the team's medical staff.
But the Panthers' announced Newton instead was tested for a concussion in the blue sideline tent, cleared and permitted to return to the game. - after missing only one play.
According to Fox Sports' Chris Myers on the broadcast, Newton's visor poked him in the eye, a odd explanation following a crushing blow.
According to the revised rule, a player is required to go to the locker room for evaluation if he is found to demonstrate "gross or sustained vertical instability (e.g., stumbling or falling to the ground when trying to stand)".
Newton walked toward the Panthers' sideline and appeared to stumble to the turf as trainers met him a few yards from the bench area.
However, the question could become whether or not Newton should have been taken to the locker room for evaluations.
Asked if Newton had displayed any signs of a brain injury, coach Ron Rivera said, "I don't think so". Newton later said he did NOT feel like he had a concussion, but suffered an eye injury from his helmet slipping down.
'NFL concussion protocol should have dictated taking out Cam Newton and examining him immediately after direct hit to his head, ' Pat Leonard wrote.
This isn't the first time the Panthers have been investigated for how it has handled the protocol. He said after the game the issue was with his eye, not his head. We saw him rock back and forth.
"I'm not here to make that type of judgment", Jordan said in the Saints' postgame locker room. "If he wants to send me his address I can send him some sauce".
When a reported noted that Jordan's sauce comment was a callback to Newton's joke, Jordan said, "Petty, right?"
