Board of Trustees accepts Simon's resignation; appoints Beekman as acting president

Chairman Brian Breslin asked state Attorney General Bill Schuette to appoint an independent third party to investigate the school as soon as possible to see whether any other employees at Michigan State were complicit in allowing serial sexual predator Larry Nassar to abuse girls and young women on campus for almost two decades.

Dantonio's full statement can be read below. In February 2017, Hollis suspended gymnastics coach Kathie Klages, who has been accused by at least two Nassar victims of discouraging her from reporting Nassar.

"We have to say that time is up". Nassar also worked for USA Gymnastics, where he abused some of the world's elite gymnasts, including several Olympians.

But from the bottom, the MSU students want change. He also said he was not pressured to retire. The trustees, he said, want to resume discussions with those who have sued the school to "reach a fair and just conclusion".

The US Senate, the House of Representatives and the federal Department of Education launched separate investigations Friday into sexual abuse in sports in the wake of twisted sports doctor Larry Nassar's sickening scandal.

The university has been under the department's oversight since 2014, stemming from two incidents of mishandled sexual assaults.

"We are here to take back our university", said Derhammer.

He went on to say he consulted with his family, colleagues, student athletes and more, and announced his retirement. "I need to raise my voice in a public sphere, and I fully intend to do that".

A special, one-hour edition of "E:60" will air at 9 a.m. ET Sunday on ESPN that, according to the network, details a pervasive failure by Michigan State to properly handle multiple reports of sexual assault and allegations of violence involving athletes and athletic department members.

The committee also sent letters to USA Swimming and USA Taekwondo seeking information about how those organizations handled allegations of sexual misconduct.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, one of the most innovative administrators in college athletics and the mastermind behind some of the most unique early season college basketball events, announced his resignation on Friday morning. Beekman is now responsible for all duties associated with the Office of the President. It also said it can not be held liable for Nassar's victims who were not gymnasts participating in events it sanctioned.

Some are likening to, where three senior officials, including the school's president, were sentenced to jail a year ago for failing to tell authorities about a sexual abuse allegation involving coach Jerry Sandusky. "Beyond that, I'm not sure I can comment".

Originally, it was meant to call for the resignation of President Simon over her handling of the Larry Nassar sexual assault investigation.

The board expressed support for Simon before her resignation, but she faced pressure from many students, faculty and legislators. "As president, it is only natural that I am the focus of this anger". Along with many I was brought to tears as I listened to the statements.

"It's unacceptable and the administration here needs to take accountability for what has happened", she said.

Kylee Kunse, a freshman who plans to major in animal science, said she came to the rally because she thought that leadership at the East Lansing school needed to change. "It starts a new chapter for the board and for this community". But the university last week asked Michigan's attorney general to conduct a review.
