Baseball is all about numbers, so is Hall of Fame

Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones celebrates with teammates after scoring a home run on his 2700th career hit in the fifth inning of a baseball game against the San Diego Padres in Atlanta. Jones was among those electe

Chipper Jones, Jim Thome, Vladimir Guerrero and Trevor Hoffman have been elected to the baseball Hall of Fame.

Seattle Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez, in his ninth year of consideration, fell 20 votes short at 70.4 percent. Who knows. But both Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens have four years of eligibility remaining.

Here via baseball-reference.com are the players who were on the 2018 Baseball Writers of America l Hall of Fame ballot.

The 1999 National League MVP, Jones was an eight-time All-Star, and he led the Braves to a World Series title in 1995, hitting.364 in the postseason that year.

Over the course of 22 seasons with six different teams, Thome's 612 home runs are the eighth-most in Major League Baseball history. Guerrero, in his second year of eligibility, received a massive surge in support from 71.7 percent in 2017 to 92.9 percent.

Closer Trevor Hoffman received the required number of votes in his third year on the ballot, getting 79.9 percent.

Hoffman retired in 2010 as the career saves leader, with 601; only Mariano Rivera has passed him since.

Well, the criteria given to voters by the Hall of Fame reads as such: "Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team (s) on which the player played".

A 2011 Arizona Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Hoffman allowed 6.99 hits per nine innings, which is the seventh-best mark ever among pitchers with at least 1,000 career innings.

"Gardy and I agreed not to talk about that one", Thome joked upon signing with the Twins. This year, Clemens' jump was just three percent and Bonds' was just under three percent. Even so, the Phillies honored Thome with a plaque in their Wall of Fame, and the Indians built a statue of him at their ballpark. He ranks second all-time among switch-hitters in batting average and RBI, and third in home runs.

"I still can't believe it", Guerrero, the first position player from the Dominican Republic to make the Hall, told ESPN Deportes on Wednesday.

Cleveland Indians infielder Jim Thome watches his three-run home run off the Baltimore Orioles' Garrett Stephenson clear the fence in the 13th inning at Camden Yards on July 28, 1996.

Chipper finished his career with a.303 batting average and 468 homers. Surely Bonds and Clemens were hoping the trend would continue in 2018.

Pete Rose, permanently banned from Major League Baseball after an investigation into his betting on the game, didn't receive any write-in votes, as he often has in the past. It makes it look like either you don't think Jones should be in the Hall, are trying to make a point, or just a complete moron. But perhaps his most memorable knock was a bloop single off Chris Tillman at Camden Yards on August 14, 2009 - which he hit on a pitch that bounced in the dirt. The late Roy Halladay also will be a first-time candidate.
