Apple details the energy use of its always-on HomePod speaker

How do you preorder the Apple HomePod and when is it released in the UK? Fans confused as Echo rival misses its own launch

Apple's HomePod enters smart speaker fray

Apple's HomePod was delayed previously, and there's some other bad news. HomePod only works if you have an iOS device. The HomePod was set up on a credenza next to the Sonos One, the Google Home Max, and the second-generation Amazon Echo; the HomePod definitely sounded the best of the group, but the Sonos One - which costs half as much - kept pace.

HomePod has a unique array of seven beamforming tweeters.

The internet-connected speaker is a direct rival to Amazon Echo, with Siri set to take on Alexa in the voice-controlled smart assistant stakes.

The HomePod will cost you $349 and will be available in stores on February 9.

HomePod uses Siri as its smart assistant, and I will say that it worked nearly perfectly throughout the demo (save for a moment when Siri took it upon herself to start playing a podcast). The device only works with a handful of (Apple) apps, like weather, maps, and reminders. At setup, however, the light is simply white, only becoming infused with color once you turn on Siri (you have the option not to if you just want to use the HomePod as a "dumb" AirPlay speaker). For an extra measly £30, you can buy two Sonos Ones. And that makes Apple's HomePod more or less useless to me.

The Apple HomePod is Apple's latest home device release.

Like other smart speakers on the market, the Apple HomePod can do a number of things beyond playing music via Apple Music.

At BESTAppleTV, we are also not sure of its success as an Apple TV addition.

Sonos writes: "Since our early days, we've been agnostic about the sources of music and audio you can hear on Sonos, preferring to stay open-minded and let you make the choice".

Apple has consistently lagged behind Amazon and Google when it comes to integrating HomeKit with other smart home devices. So while the HomePod is similar to Google Home, there may be features that will sell you on it. It is smart, powered by Siri and capable of intelligently adjusting its output to its surroundings.

Its smart home control capabilities are strong, though. And little more than six years ago, you couldn't find any consumer device with a built-in voice assistant.

But I walked away feeling impressed and surprised by how much I liked how it sounded, and found myself imagining how it would fit into my home life. Asset manager Boris Schlossberg of FX Strategy advised that Apple is "in trouble" and that they are "making a huge mistake" betting on the high price of the HomePod given the existing market. We don't know yet how it will stack up to the HomePod, quality-wise, but if price is the consideration, then this is a goo deal.
