After unilaterally declaring Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital city.

The Egypt-sponsored resolution, which avoided naming the USA or Trump directly, sought to express "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem" and asked other countries not to follow suit and move their embassies to a city considered holy by Jews, Christians and Muslims.

The United States was certain to veto the Egyptian-sponsored resolution, but its Arab supporters wanted the vote to demonstrate that countries everywhere and even many USA allies such as Britain, France and Japan are against Trump's action. However, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley reacted angrily to the measure.

"The fact that this veto is being done in defence of American sovereignty and in defence of America's role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council", Haley said.

Haley called the resolution and the votes for it "an insult".

The US stance "stands against the worldwide consensus, contravenes the resolutions of global community and Security Council resolutions and represents a complete bias with the occupation and aggression", spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in a statement.

But Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in some of his sharpest rhetoric since Trump's announcement, reiterated in public comments to senior Palestinian officials Monday that he will no longer accept the U.S.as a Mideast mediator. The draft doesn't mention the United States but it expresses regret over the recent decisions concerning Jerusalem's status. Palestinians want the capital of an independent Palestinian state to be in the city's eastern sector, which Israel captured in a 1967 war and annexed in a move never recognised internationally.

NPR's Michele Kelemen reported for newscast that Egypt sponsored the resolution in order to "demonstrate that much of the world opposes Trump's action, including US allies on the security council, Britain and France, who see Jerusalem as a shared capital of Israel and a future Palestinian state".

"You lit a candle of truth".

Trump's declaration unleashed widespread anger and rallies within Palestine and in major cities across the world.

Although it was certain from the beginning that such a resolution would be blocked by the veto-wielding U.S., the Arab world and its supporters had wanted to table a vote at the top United Nations body in order show the depth of global opposition for Trump's decision. And she insisted that this position "is fully in line with the previous Security Council resolutions".

In Netanyahu's words, "One defeated the many, truth defeated lies".

With the Palestinians rejecting USA mediation, Russian Federation said it was ready to take over.
