Trump weighs plan to oust Tillerson
The White House is planning to remove Rex Tillerson from his role as secretary of state and replace him with Mike Pompeo, the current Central Intelligence Agency director.
President Donald Trump is considering a plan to oust Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, whose relationship has been strained by the top US diplomat's softer line on North Korea and other differences, senior administration officials said on Thursday.
The newspaper quoted unnamed senior administration officials as saying Trump had soured on Tillerson and was ready for a change at the State Department, probably around the end of the year.
"Tillerson was one of the most blatant revolving door cases in the Trump administration and a clear sign that Trump's government was of, by, and for the fossil fuel industry", said Louaillier in a statement.
"The vice president has never had to persuade me to remain as secretary of State because I have never considered leaving", Tillerson said. But he now appears poised to lose an argument: over Tillerson's objections, the president is poised to recognize the disputed city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The favored candidate to replace Tillerson is current CIA Director Mike Pompeo, which would leave a vacancy at the CIA.
She says Tillerson continues to lead the department, and that the entire Cabinet is focused on completing Trump's first year in office. Axios's Mike Allen and Jonathan Swan reported last month that Pompeo's stock was rising in the White House and that he was a leading contender to replace Tillerson.
This comes after a bitter few months between Tillerson and Mr. Trump in which the president has repeatedly undermined America's chief diplomat.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says there are "no personnel announcements at this time". On several occasions, the president publicly undercut his diplomatic initiatives. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, could present a wrinkle in the strategy.
If carried out, the staff changes would be the latest in a string of firings or resignations in the Trump administration including the departures of the chief of staff, national security adviser and Federal Bureau of Investigation director.
Ms Bishop says she has formed a very close personal and professional working relationship with Mr Tillerson and would be "very sorry" to see him go. Tillerson has been overtly refusing to take Trump's hostile line on North Korea.
