Russia Ready to Be Mediator between US, North Korea

Donald Trump might get a helping hand from Russia on North Korea

"North Korea will seek negotiation with the United States while continuing to pursue its effort to be recognised as a de facto nuclear-possessing country", South Korea's Unification Ministry said in a report, without offering any reasons for its conclusion.

Moscow calls on USA and allies to refrain from provoking tensions and exerting "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang.

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea, the United States and Japan, and says its weapons are necessary to counter USA aggression.

The Russian diplomat reiterated Moscow's concern over North Korea's "dangerous" nuclear ambitions, but vowed to "maintain contacts at the highest possible level".

"And in the calculation it is not taken at all that the implementation of such a plan will cause a real humanitarian catastrophe".

Peskov's comments come just days after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a new set of US-drafted sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang's November 29 ballistic missile test.

The United States announced sanctions on two North Korean officials behind their country's ballistic missile program on Tuesday, while Russian Federation reiterated an offer to mediate to ease tensions between Washington and Pyongyang. Among other countries which supported the move was China, a lone major ally of the North Korean regime in the region. Those sanctions sought to further limit North Korea's access to refined petroleum products and crude oil and its earnings from workers overseas.

Following the vote on Friday, US President Donald Trump endorsed the stricter measures, saying on Twitter "The World wants Peace, not Death!".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the White House have sent mixed messages regarding the administration's stance toward North Korea after Pyongyang launched an intercontinental ballistic missile late last month.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's government has conducted several missile tests this year, which have drawn condemnation from the worldwide community.
