Mike Pence delays Egypt, Israel trip 'over tax reform vote'

The decision also came amid mounting tension in the region over President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Pence was originally scheduled to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on the trip, but a Palestinian Authority official said last week that "they are no longer coordinating with them [the U.S.] on this visit", noting that they were unaware of the delay.

"The tax vote is still in very good shape, but we don't want to take any chances whatsoever", the official said. "The largest tax cut in American history is a landmark accomplishment for President Trump and a relief to millions of hardworking Americans", said Pence's spokesperson, Alyssa Farah, in a statement. "The United States has crossed all the red lines with the Jerusalem decision". The vice president's office had originally planned to leave on Saturday night for Israel but pushed back his departure because of the pending tax bill. Therefore, to get the most out of the trip, the Vice President will now be traveling in mid-January. This was the Trump administration's first Security Council veto, and all 14 other members supported the resolution, underscoring the US isolation on the issue.

Trump said he had made a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital to keep a campaign promise, noting that several of his predecessors had vowed to do so, but never did.

Aside from the protests, Palestinian, Muslim and Coptic leaders had cancelled meetings with the vice president, who had already trimmed the trip by three days.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the package on Tuesday with the Senate vote to follow late Tuesday or early on Wednesday.

Senator John McCain's return home to Arizona to fight cancer has left Republicans with a razor-thin margin to push the legislation over the finishing line.

The vice president had been scheduled to be in Cairo on Wednesday for a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and was expected to arrive in Israel later Wednesday for a visit to the Western Wall.

"Now were are going to look at January and the trip may even be a little bigger". The vice president wanted to make sure that he was in place to break a tie if it were necessary, the official said.
