Flynn: Guilty plea is in best interest of my family and country

Fox reporter Flynn was charged with ‘Martha Stewart Statute

Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, pleaded guilty Friday to lying to the FBI, becoming the first Trump White House official to face criminal charges and admit guilt so far in the wide-ranging election investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

In May, Trump fired Comey over "this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation", as Trump described it. Comey's ouster was a stunning event, one that led directly to the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel for Russiagate.

Flynn admitted he lied to FBI investigators about his private discussions at the end of December 2016 with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, about United States sanctions imposed on Moscow by the administration of then president Barack Obama.

The charges against Flynn relate to a series of discussions the general had last December, during the presidential transition, when he reportedly told Kislyak that Trump's White House might go easy on sanctions against Russian Federation that were imposed by President Obama and asked Kislyak to sabotage a United Nations resolution on Israel that Obama's White House supported. The conventional wisdom around the charges against Manafort is that Mueller was trying to use them to get more information about possible collusion with Russian Federation.

Flynn pleaded guilty Friday to lying to investigators about these conversations he had with then-Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak in December 2016.

Flynn, who served in Donald Trump's administration for just 24 days before being forced to resign for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his Russian Federation contacts, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

A source closed to President Donald Trump said the latest developments surrounding his former national security advisor Michael Flynn are "very, very, very bad," according to NBC News.

With Flynn, the charges actually stem from his role on the White House transition team, and they involve a man who was clearly close to Trump - a man to whom the notoriously fickle Trump has for some reason remained loyal even long after Flynn's usefulness to him expired.

Flynn didn't speak in court, other than to say he would plead guilty.

The question is what else Flynn has offered apart from his guilty plea.

President Obama warns Trump during a meeting at the White House that Flynn is a problem. A spokesperson for the White House also did not immediately respond.

Flynn is cooperating with Mueller's office as a condition of his plea deal.

Michael Flynn was charged with "willfully and knowingly" making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements".

Next, Flynn can tell Mueller what, if anything, he knows about the contacts between Russian Federation and a series of Trump officials in 2016, including meetings, emails, phone calls and trips involving Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Carter Page, Roger Stone and George Papadopoulos.

At 11:12 a.m. ET, nearly 40 minutes into his first court appearance Friday, Flynn officially pleaded guilty to lying to investigators.

After Manafort was ousted as Trump's campaign chief in August 2016, Gates continued working on behalf of the soon-to-be president, helping fundraise $25 million for the pro-Trump nonprofit America First Policies and working on Trump's inaugural committee.
