Former Miami Hurricane Devin Hester Officially Retires From NFL
Hester was the most decorated and unsafe return man in the league for almost a decade, making four Pro Bowls and being named first-team All-Pro three times.
On Tuesday, NFL great Devin Hester officially retired from football. Because the scope of his greatness is largely limited to his special teams play, the body of work, although quite impressive, is not as well-rounded as other players who may also be up for possible induction. Chicago's 2006 second round draft pick became a household name by striking fear into the hearts of punters and kickers alike, with fourteen touchdowns from punt returns and five from kickoff returns. Hester used Twitter to announce his retirement. His return of the Super Bowl XLI opening kickoff remains one of the iconic moments in Bears history. He made an impact on the game just by standing on the field and being Devin Hester.
Hester made an immediate impact as a Bears rookie in 2006, setting an National Football League single-season record with five kick return touchdowns and then eclipsing the mark with six TDs in 2007. In a post on social media, the 35-year-old Hester says he realized it was time. He acknowledged the team and said that the city helped shaped who he is today.
One of the more impressive parts about it was he made special teams a must-watch event.
On the day of his retirement, Jarrett Payton made a decision to take some time to reflect on the career of Hester from his former place of work: Halas Hall.
We can also compare Hester's career numbers with those of Brian Mitchell, considered the best kick returner of a previous generation. Teams routinely kicked away from Hester, giving the Bears consistently good field position. In his final career game, he averaged 38.8 yards on five kickoff returns for Seattle in a playoff loss to the Falcons on January 14, 2017. "You type in the best running back of all time; I'm pretty sure he's in the Hall of Fame".
