California Highway Patrol Officer Dies in Crash on Highway in Bay Area

The collision was reported at 12 a.m. and involved at least one CHP patrol vehicle.

The Bakersfield Police Department sent thoughts and prayers to the California Highway Patrol via Facebook after the death of one of their officers on December 24th. Another officer in the auto, Jonathan Velasquez, was treated at a hospital for lacerations and released Monday, said Sgt. Rob Nacke, a CHP spokesman.

The two officers were assigned to a "maximum enforcement" Christmas Eve patrol for drunken drivers and speeders and were parked on the shoulder of southbound I-880 near the Winton Avenue on-ramp when the auto left the roadway and struck them from behind, Nacke said.

- A CHP officer was killed this morning in a crash on southbound Interstate Highway 880 just north of state Highway 92 in Hayward according to CHP Golden Gate.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as a 22-year-old man from Hayward, who, according to Sanchez, "had too much to drink and too much to smoke".

"This is not the way we wanted to celebrate Christmas Day", Sanchez said.

"Anne and I are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Officer Camilleri", Brown said. The CHP says it appears the driver of the Cadillac was not only drunk, but under the influence of drugs and was coming home from a party.

California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement about the crash.

Camilleri is survived by his wife, Rosanna, and their three children, his parents and his brother and sister.

In honor of Camilleri, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
