Sarah Sanders Accused Of 'Lying' During Press Briefing On Paul Manafort Charges

Paul Manafort advisor to Donald Trump is seen on the floor of the Quicken Loans Arena at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland Ohio

Tuesday's White House press briefing focused mainly on questions about Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, which White House Chief of Staff John Kelly called "very distracting" to the president, according to The Hill.

According to court documents, Papadopolous' false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation concerned his contact with a professor with connections to the Russian government about "thousands of emails" that could damage Hillary Clinton. None of the charges against Manafort and Gates appear to have anything to do directly with the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Russians to interfere with the election-something President Trump noted in his Monday morning tweets shortly after the indictments were unsealed.

In a stunning moment Huckabee Sanders actually described former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who worked for the campaign for more than five months, as someone who was hired "to handle the delegate process. and he was dismissed not too long after that".

"Today's announcement has nothing to do with the president, has nothing to do with the president's campaign or campaign activity", she said.

Mrs. Sanders said that the Trump campaign has always fully cooperated with the investigation, including turning over all of Mr. Papadopoulos's emails.

However, Papadopoulos was not taken up on his offer, and no meeting between Trump and Putin occurred during the campaign.

"No activity was ever done in an official capacity", Huckabee Sanders said of Papadopoulos. Meanwhile, CNN's fact check read: "Reality check: Papadopoulos' role", and listed that Trump had in the past cited Papadopoulos as an "excellent guy" and that Papadopoulos had attended "at least one meeting".

The professor, the statement indicates, had "substantial connections to Russian government officials" even though Papadopoulos claimed the professor was "a nothing".

Sanders also said Trump only met Papadopoulos once and said he played a "minimal role, if one at all".

"We do think it will wrap up soon".

Sanders also raised a few eyebrows by starting the press briefing by using an analogy of reporters getting drunk and trying to split the tab to illustrate tax reform.
