Trump Breaks Silence on Roy Moore Allegations

Donald Trump

"We don't need a liberal person in there, a Democrat", Mr Trump said of next month's election.

The president's remarks came as Moore has faced mounting pressure from Republicans, as well as Trump's daughter, Ivanka, over accusations that he pursued romantic relations with teenage girls and sexually molested two of them.

It's a rationale not unlike the one used by some uneasy Republicans past year to justify voting for Mr Trump following the Access Hollywood tape revelations and allegations that he had harassed or assaulted more than a dozen women.

Faye Gary, a police officer for 37 years in Gadsden, Alabama, where Roy Moore worked in the '70s and '80s, said Tuesday that local law enforcement was instructed to prevent the future Senate candidate from preying on high school cheerleaders at football games.

Trump said he will announce next week whether he will campaign on Moore's behalf. The White House has said that Trump's position is that it is down to the voters of Alabama to decide. Trump forcibly condemned Franken in multiple tweets but has remained silent on the accusations against Moore.

When asked if Trump would be campaigning, Conway said there was "no plan to do that" but didn't explicitly shut down the possibility.

Republican U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other prominent lawmakers have pressed Moore to quit the race. "He's run eight races, and this has never come up", he said.

Ben DuPré, who identified himself as a longtime Moore ally and billed the event as a news conference, said the former judge is "above reproach".

Trump's comments are likely to complicate an already knotty situation for Republicans. The campaign says former restaurant employees and a former customer don't remember Nelson working there or Moore eating there. "It's bad on crime, it's awful on the border, it's bad on the military", he added. "Now he's looking at the situation and thinking there's a chance that Roy Moore can win, and if Roy Moore can win, that's ultimately in his interest because all he cares about is getting a big legislative win". Jeff Flake, who has been critical of Trump and is retiring in 2018, said Monday.

I mean, Roy Moore denies it. "I just don't think that is the direction for the party".

Still, Sanders and other White House officials have highlighted the fact that Trump has not campaigned with Moore.

He continued, "But Donald Trump didn't seem to see a problem of being on the side of neo-Nazis and now he apparently doesn't see a problem with being on the side of the accused child predator".
