The Singles Day Sales start tomorrow

Hit Singles

Alibaba has racked up $25.3 billion in sales on Singles Day, China's biggest online shopping day, so far, with close to $7 billion in sales made in the first 30 minutes. These sales were added towards the total sales for Singles' Day.

The day was unremarkable until 2009, when Alibaba turned the occasion into an online shopping festival.

In China, Alibaba's main rival, online retailer JD.com, said sales had topped $16.7 billion - though the tallies are not comparable because JD tracks transactions starting from November 1 through to the actual day.

With a focus on retail as entertainment, this year is expected to be bigger with more add-ons including augmented-reality games, shopping tours and virtual fitting rooms. Just five minutes after midnight, Alipay, Alibaba's online payment system, was already processing 256,000 transactions per second, double the highest rate recorded previous year.

Chinese shoppers on Saturday spent billions of dollars in an annual online commercial extravaganza that was once meant as a celebration for lonely hearts. It's not just an event for those in China anymore, Singles Day is global.

The company has converted about 100,000 retail stores to "smart stores", which will allow consumers to receive tailored shopping experience with the use of facial recognition, "cloud shelf" and location-based store and discount recommendations among others. Alipay processed 1.5 billion payment transactions in total, up 41% from 2016, and processed 256,000 transactions per second at peak.

China is already the world's largest e-commerce market and the share of online shopping that makes up all consumer spending grows every year.

Singles's Day far out ranks the entire Black Friday Weekend in terms of sales, previous year Single's Day sales were triple the combined total from Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Alibaba managed to expand Singles Day from a local Chinese sales event to a global sales day.

"It could end up dominating e-commerce in developing countries".
