DPS Trooper Shot, Killed In Freestone County

DPS trooper shot dead northeast of Dallas suspect in custody

Authorities identified Black as the lone suspect in the death of a Texas DPS trooper who was shot and killed around 3:45 p.m. Thursday in Freestone County. He is accused of fatally shooting Trooper Damon Allen on Thursday. The agency says Allen joined the department in 2002 and was married with three children.

An obituary posted Friday by Bowers Funeral Home in Teague, Texas, says the funeral for Trooper Damon Allen will be at 10 a.m. December 1 at Mexia High School's football stadium, about 92 miles (148 kilometers) south of Dallas.

When deputies arrived to investigate, someone began shooting at them, authorities said. He then returned to the patrol unit and the suspect fired multiple shots from a rifle at Trooper Allen, who died at the scene.

The suspected gunman who is believed to have killed a Texas state trooper on Thanksgiving Day was captured in Waller County.

KYTX-TV reported in July that Black was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving and aggravated assault against a public servant following a police chase in Smith County.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the fatal shooting of Allen a "heinous crime" in a statement Thursday.

Allen was the second Texas trooper to be killed while on duty this month and the first trooper in the state to be shot in the line of duty since 2008.

Overnight, a Hays County deputy was injured and a suspect found dead after a shooting that occurred while deputies responded to a burglary report in Wimberley, officials said. Details of the charges are unclear, including the date, and according to jail records, bond was forfeited.

Hours later, the Waller County Sheriff's Office said the suspect's vehicle was spotted in Hempstead, more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Fairfield. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said.
