Bowling Green man charged with assaulting Sen. Paul

KSP: Sen. Rand Paul victim of assault

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., listens to questions on health care and the Republican effort to repeal ObamaCare.

Rene Boucher, 59, of Bowling Green has been charged with one count of fourth-degree assault and is being held at a detention centre.

A spokeswoman for Paul's office said in an email Saturday that the senator was "blindsided". "Senator Paul is fine". Stay with 8News online and on air for the latest updates. At the time the report was made Paul was being seen by a physician and the extent of any rib injury was unclear, the complaint says.

"‪Kelley and I appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday's unfortunate event", Paul wrote on social media Sunday morning.

It is not known if Senator Paul knew his attacker. "Thank you for your thoughts and prayers".

Boucher was booked into the Warren County Regional Jail.

Boucher's purported Facebook page included links to articles and memes critical of President Donald Trump and a news article about a Montana Republican congressional candidate who attacked a reporter the day before winning his seat.

Boucher is an anesthesiologist and pain specialist, according to the Bowling Green Daily News.

The arrest warrant said that Boucher admitted to tackling Paul.

In June, Paul was among several congress members practicing in Washington, D.C. for the annual congressional baseball game when a gunman opened fire, wounding Rep. Steve Scalise.
