"Soaring to the depths of our universe, gallant spacecraft roam the cosmos, snapping images of celestial wonders", said NASA, "Some spacecraft have instruments capable of capturing radio emissions". In 1996, NASA's Galileo spacecraft made the first flyby of Ganymede, capturing radio signals from the moon's magnetosphere using the probe's Plasma Wave Experiment instrument.
There are over 20 different space sounds featured in NASA's new playlist, including Jovian magnetic burps, plasma waves, and interstellar light curves.
Some of these radio signals were translated into sounds to understand the signal better, the process also known as "data sonification".
It's not quite the "Monster Mash", but NASA said the 22-track playlist of cosmic cries "is sure to make your skin crawl".
Now it should be pointed out that these are not the sounds directly recorded from space.
When Juno entered Jupiter's orbit a year ago, the planet's magnetic field collided with the solar wind (charged particles released by the sun). These were captured by Cassini as it investigated the auroras on the Jupiter's poles. Saturn's radio emissions sound like a robot crying for help in the midst of a wind storm. Each track has been created by converting the data from various space probes and instruments into audible sound waves.
Sounds of a Comet Encounter: During its February 14, 2011, flyby of comet Tempel 1, an instrument on the protective shield on NASA's Stardust spacecraft was pelted by dust particles and small rocks, as can be heard in this audio track.
