Over the next several years, the company will level some of the existing structures, put up 18 new buildings, and renovate 6.7 million square feet. Microsoft now has 125 buildings at its campus, and once the project is complete this will rise to 131 buildings.

The extension of Microsoft's Redmond campus is a reflection of the company's recent growth, and it also follows other redevelopment projects at Microsoft's offices in Vancouver BC and London. The project would take about five and seven years to complete.

The company today revealed plans to launch a multibillion-dollar overhaul of its headquarters in the Seattle suburb of Redmond. The campus will be divided into "team neighborhoods", which I imagine turns every single day into a corporate retreat team-building exercise.

"We want to create a campus that creates the best workplace we can envision for our employees, where they can be creative, where they can learn and collaborate with each other, where they can create technology that moves forward for our customers", explains Smith. Our plans include a 2-acre open plaza that will fit up to 12,000 people, running and walking trails, facilities for soccer and cricket, and retail space. But as its ongoing search for a second headquarters highlights in no uncertain terms, the space-constrained Puget Sound region has few large undeveloped areas appropriate for an expansion that would accommodate up to 50,000 workers-the number Amazon said it may someday employ at its HQ2.

The campus remodel will be built for pedestrians and bikes with all cars in an underground parking facility. We prize our relationship with the City of Redmond and will work closely with officials on the approval for campus and building architectural designs, engineering, building permit review and land use code compliance. However, with the new buildings, the company plans to take a different approach.

It will be the company's biggest physical expansion in more than a decade.

The developer of the Spring District, by the way, is Wright Runstad, which back in 1986 built the first six X-shaped buildings that will be replaced as part of this latest renovation.
