LiAngelo Balll, UCLA Teammates Swarmed at Airport Upon Returning to US

U.S. President Donald Trump

Thank you President Trump’? – US leader hints at UCLA gratitude for negotiating release

On Wednesday, all three admitted their guilt at a news conference in Los Angeles, one day after returning home.

President Trump comments on release of LiAngelo Ball and 2 other UCLA Men's Basketball players who were arrested in China for allegedly shoplifting.

But Ball - who is the younger brother of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball - Riley and Hill missed the game as they were confined to their hotel as the legal process plays outs.

The Commissioner says the three were allowed to leave after the situation was resolved to the satisfaction of Chinese authorities. They were placed under house arrest at the luxury hotel and were not permitted to play in UCLA's season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Friday.

The three basketball players from the University of California, Los Angeles, were detained by police on November 7 in the Chinese city of Hangzhou over allegations of shoplifting.

The players did not play in the game and were reportedly facing a 20-day home arrest, but U.S. President Donald Trump intervened on the players behalf, which may have had a role in the earlier-than-expected return.

"What they did was unfortunate", Trump said. The President followed up by pointing out that these players could have gone to jail for a very long time. It also helps that US Chief of Staff John F. Kelly remains in personal contact with Chinese authorities and the families of the players.

The players departed from Shanghai and landed back in the United States on Tuesday night, per James T. Areddy of the Wall Street Journal. Now it's up to UCLA, possibly with some input from the Pac-12 Conference, to determine how the three freshmen should atone for what is a very embarrassing incident for the school.

Since the matter did not occur on the court, it would be up to UCLA whether the players will be punished, Scott said.

"I want to be clear that we take seriously any violations of the law", UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement.

A contrite Riley and Hill expressed similar sentiments.
