Bali volcano live webcam: Watch Mount Agung ERUPT as tourist hotspot issues 'RED WARNING'
The alert status was not changed from a level 3 alert, its second-highest level, despite the latest eruption, Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
Indonesia's disaster management agency said the eruptions were no longer "phreatic", which means they are triggered by water hitting superheated rocks and usually short-lived.
The flights of about 5,000 passengers were cancelled on Sunday and another 2,500 holidaymakers could not get in because their planes were rerouted or never took off.
Made Sugiri, an employee at Mahagiri Panoramic Resort some 10 kilometres from the crater, said a thin layer of volcanic ash reached the area.
The Mount Agung volcano on Bali erupted with greater force Sunday, prompting some airlines to cancel flights to and from the popular resort island and forcing an global airport on a nearby resort island to close, according to local officials.
Several airlines have cancelled flights around Bali, with nearly 5,000 passengers having to find an alternate route, ABC News reported. Virgin and Dutch airline KLM are also reported to have cancelled flights.
An exclusion zone of 7.5km (4.5 miles) remains in place for those near the volcano, with authorities distributing masks to those in close proximity to smoke.
Bali is a popular tourist destination, known for its seaside resorts and sandy beaches. These pyroclastic flows travelled east and south at over 60 km/hr, wiping out several villages and causing the death of over 1000 people.
Mount Agung's alert status was raised to the highest in September following a dramatic increase in tremors from the volcano, which doubled the exclusion zone around the crater and prompted more than 140,000 people to leave the area.
About 25,000 people have been unable to return to their homes since September, when Agung showed signs of activity for the first time in more than half a century.
Indonesia sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" and has more than 120 active volcanoes.
