Illinois Sues Uber Over 2016 Data Breach

Uber reveals 2.7 million British users hit by data breach

Washington state sues Uber for millions over data breach cover up

The lawsuit filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court contends Uber's failure to protect consumers' personal information violated city and state laws.

Uber also said the 2.7 million figure is an "approximation rather than an accurate and definitive count" because it can not always tell where each customer was located.

Hackers stole names, email addresses, and phone numbers of Uber's riders and drivers in October 2016.

A spokesman for Uber told the BBC the firm is not able to clarify how many United Kingdom drivers are included in the 2.7 million.

Central to the lawsuit are claims that Uber failed to protect its data and, once the breach occurred, actively went out of its way to hide this.

"As part of our investigation we are still waiting for technical reports which should give full confirmation of the figures and the type of personal data that has been compromised".

Uber spokeswoman Molly Spaeth responded in a statement, according to The Chicago Tribune, noting that the ride sharing company was "committed to changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make, and working hard to regain the trust of consumers".

In a statement, deputy commisioner of the ICO, James Dipple-Johnstone, said: On its own [the stolen] information is unlikely to pose a direct threat to citizens.

The company made the admission to the information Commissioner's Office (ICO) which is investigating the incident, which affected 58 million users and drivers and was kept secret until last week. People should continue to be vigilant and follow the advice from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

"Uber's conduct has been truly stunning". It's monitoring the affected accounts and has flagged them for additional fraud protection.

The government said the new Data Protection Bill would grant the ICO further powers to defend consumer interests, and issue even higher fines of up to £18m, or 4% of an organisation's global turnover in exceptional cases.

That revelation prompted a delay in a high-profile trial over whether Uber stole self-driving auto technology from Waymo, a Google spinoff.
