Derrick Rose is away from Cavs and is considering retirement

Cavaliers guard Derrick Rose has stepped away from the team, ESPN reports.

Rose has not played in a game since November 7 because of an ankle injury that has nagged him all season.

ESPN cites league sources who say that there is uncertainty if he will return to the team. He was averaging 14.3 points per game in his seven games this season.

Rose, now 29, still has a lucrative sneaker deal with Adidas - six years and almost $70 million remaining on the contract, according to ESPN's Nick DePaula.

Rose, 29, has struggled with injuries for the last seven years.

One team source told ESPN of Rose: "He's exhausted of being hurt and it's taking a toll on him mentally".

The Cavaliers said that Rose's current absence is excused.

He experienced some major highs, including winning the 2010-11 NBA MVP award after averaging 25.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game.

He was placed in a walking boot last week when the ankle wasn't deemed to be healing sufficiently. Until Isaiah Thomas is able to return from his hip injury, the Cavaliers will continue to start Jose Calderon at point guard with James and Dwyane Wade handling much of the primary ball handling when each player is on the floor. Last season, Rose disappeared from the Knicks without notifying coaches, then explained that the matter was "a family issue". His injury woes began in April 2012 when he tore his ACL during the latter moment of a playoff game that had already been decided. He is only playing 26.9 minutes a game, which would be the least minutes he has averaged in an National Basketball Association season during his 10-year National Basketball Association career.
