Apple May Unveil Standalone AR Headset in 2019

10 November 2017, 01:04 | Virginia Benson

The company has been working on the augmented reality technology behind the scenes and it aims at readying the technology ready for an AR headset by 2019 according to a report by Bloomberg.

Apple plans to build a standalone AR headset that will be powered by what the company internally calls rOS, or reality OS, according to Bloomberg.

It also has its team - the same one that made ARKit a reality - developing a special operating system for AR, for the moment dubbed "rOS" for "reality operating system".

So far, Apple's publicly revealed projects include the ARKit tools that were released within iOS 11 to allow developers to create AR applications for iOS devices. The company is looking to create a device that will change the game as much as the iPhone did back in 2007.

With public support from Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple sees augmented reality as a possible next step in its future.

Since the release of Apple's iOS 11 mobile operating system on September 19, over 1,000 AR apps have been approved for the iPhone and iPad.

Mike Rockwell, who previously led the engineering efforts at Dolby Labs, is at the helm of a team of several hundred engineers from across Apple all working on various hardware and software projects - including the AR headset - under the codename "T288", Bloomber reports. While virtual reality (VR) headsets place the user in a thoroughly digital world, augmented reality (AR) would overlay digital information onto the real one.

Cook said in an interview last month that quality AR headsets or glasses are not there yet technologically.

Apple engineers are reportedly experimenting with ways to interact with the headset, either by voice, touch, or head gestures. Apple is also considering launching an App Store specifically for the headset. The company wants to have the headset's core technologies completed by 2019.

"If we can make it work it will be well worth it for us to give everybody an Apple Watch but we've got to get the technology right", Bertolini said Tuesday while speaking at the Techonomy conference in Half Moon Bay, Calif. "There's virtual reality and there's augmented reality-both of these are incredibly interesting. AR is going to change everything". A mass-usable prototype does not seem to have arrived yet, though; the report says that Apple is using HTC Vive headsets and an in-house design that uses an iPhone screen to test some aspects of the technology.
