Caroline Garcia won a marathon match against Elina Svitolina, prevailing 6-7 (7) 6-3 7-5 after two hours and 44 minutes.
A dominant display by Caroline Wozniacki leaves Simona Halep with it all to do to qualify, but the night belonged to Caroline Garcia and her comeback over Elina Svitolina.
Caroline Garcia has been on a whirlwind ride that carried her into the WTA Finals.
Halep faced six break points and lost only one when she conceded her serve with a double fault in the sixth game.
Woznaicki, 27, produced a near flawless display to dismantle Halep 6-0, 6-2 at the WTA Finals to record her second dominant win of the tournament following her opening win over Elina Svitolina.
Those back-to-back titles gave her a huge burst which allowed her to break into the top 10 for the first time while simultaneously secured her the last available slot in Singapore. I mean, I wish I knew what was happening today with my game, because even though it's 7-5 in the third - my game was completely off.
"The defeat was a blow to Halep's hopes of finishing the year ranked number one, and she said on wtatennis.com: "I think it was one of my bad days".
The Dane had won 17 games in a row across her last two matches before Halep finally got on the scoreboard after 34 minutes when she held to love. "I felt comfortable, played aggressive when I needed to and ran the balls down when I needed to". "I did some good shots, good points, and I missed too many to win a match". "I'll try to forget this day and try to play my next game as if nothing had happened", said the Ukrainian, dépitée.
Svitolina and Garcia's match lasted more than twice as long as the one that preceded it and was the second dramatic encounter between the pair this month.
"Everything I have in my head, I need to shake it off and play better next round". "I think that kind of motivates me to just start off strong and go for it".
"It was so many up-and-down in this matches, a little bit like the one we played in Beijing". "It's nice and I did enjoy the time on court".
Despite losing both her opening matches Svitolina could finish second in the group should she beat Halep in straight sets on Friday (October 27). "It's often like this and I tried to improve this part of myself".
