Eli Harold Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reed kneel during the national anthem before a NFL game. Protests have reached down to the college level as students reconcile with divisive language

From the moment back in August past year that Colin Kaepernick knelt, he took pains to describe it as a respectful but pointed protest against police killings of African-American men, and the lack of accountability thereof.

In a later tweet, Trump suggested action needed to be taken in response to the large number of players who continue to protest during the national anthem.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league had not sought a commitment by players to stand for the anthem at Tuesday's talks. Existing NFL policy says players "should" stand for the anthem but does not explicitly make it mandatory.

The President also tweeted that he supports the NFL instituting a rule that players have to stand during the National Anthem. Total lack of respect to our great country!

We are fully aware that in this culture war he has cynically escalated, Trump has the support of millions of fans, who just want the multi-millionaires on their teams to stand up, put their hands on heart, and sing.

The statement continued: "As we said last week, everyone who is part of our National Football League community has a tremendous respect for our country, our flag, our anthem and our military. It's also important for us to honor our flag and our country, and we think our fans expect us to do that". "We hope and are going to try to get that to zero", Goodell said. The protests had mostly fizzled out until last month, when Trump reignited the issue by decrying any player who kneeled during the anthem as a "son of a bitch" who should be fired. "We want our players to stand". The president has targeted the protests as disrespecting the flag and the troops, when in fact, the players and others participating in the protests have specifically stated that they are taking a knee in protest of the racial inequality in the United States.

Donald Trump is continuing his attack on players who protest during the national anthem.
