"Our biggest concern was our safety and the public's safety and not wanting anybody, paparazzi, to follow him", Brooke said.

Disgraced former National Football League star OJ Simpson is expecting to receive a multi-million-dollar payday for his first post-prison interview, sources say.

At his parole hearing in July, Simpson, 70, told Nevada's parole board that he wanted to move back to the Sunshine State after first arriving in 1999, per the Miami Herald's Elizabeth Koh.

Bondi said, "there is no justification under these circumstances for asking the taxpayers of Florida to foot the bill for hosting Mr. Simpson's parole".

She spoke from Lovelock, where she said she witnessed Simpson signing documents to be released.

She said it was out of the ordinary for a prisoner to be released on a weekend, but she said officials anxious a media presence could prove unsafe to Simpson, corrections staff and the surrounding communities.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said earlier in the week that Simpson was not welcome in Florida. "Our state should not become a country club for this convicted criminal".

He was picked up by an unidentified friend. Scotto, however, is refusing to comment on the situation.

Simpson lost his home near Miami to foreclosure in 2012.

Justin and Sydney Simpson most recently lived in St. Petersburg. For now, though, he will stay in a gated residence with some friends in a Las Vegas suburb.

He will be supervised by the state division of parole and probation for five years.

Simpson claimed he was retrieving memorabilia that had been stolen from him. He retired in 1979.

Simpson was arrested after a low-speed vehicle chase through Los Angeles that was broadcast live by television stations and watched by millions. Like the chase, his trial became a media sensation. But he was found liable for their deaths in a civil case in 1997 and ordered to pay the victims' families $33.5 million.

David Cook, attorney for the Goldman family, said on Wednesday the judgment amount has almost doubled with interest over the years to more than US$65m and the family will continue to seek payment. On the night of September 13, 2007, Simpson and a group of men entered a room in the Palace Station hotel of Las Vegas, Nevada.

"He's going to Florida", LaVergne said. A dramatized retelling of the trial, called "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson" earned nationwide praise.
