Google to remove experimental calorie counter from Maps following user backlash

Google Maps ditches automatic calorie estimates after users say it's not helpful and even potentially harmful

Google Maps Shows Walking Distance As Calories And People Are Pissed

The idea behind the concept was simple enough - to let users know how many calories they could be burning if they made a decision to walk instead of drive a route, The Washington Post noted.

The experimental feature, styled as a pink cupcake, showed users how many estimated calories in terms of cupcakes that users would burn if they walked to the destination of their destination. It worked by demonstrating how much calorie values were worth based on mini cupcakes - for example, telling you that you burned an estimated number of calories that were the equivalent of two mini cupcakes.

Google has ditched a feature from its hugely-popular navigation app on iOS, thanks to "strong user feedback".

But it was a secondary feature in the walking directions that led to the controversy: in addition to displaying the calories burned, it converted them to mini cupcakes. It doesn't just show you the calorie count of the potential walk, it shows you what it amounts to in junk food - and in cupcakes, a type of food that is particularly associated with women.

Others noted, however, that other mapping apps have long had similar features (though not with the whole cupcake aspect).

In a response, Priya Tew, a member of the Association of UK Dietitians, also called the feature "triggering", adding it could make users feel "shamed". However, the problem is that nobody has said what an average person should look like.

Reportedly, Google chose to give up on a new, experimental feature which first appeared on iOS about a week ago.

One user on Twitter claimed that the use of the mini-cupcake emoji was "extremely triggering" for "ppl [sic] who have had eating disorders" and is also "generally shamey [sic]", whatever that's supposed to mean.

The feature first started to roll-out to users on iOS about a week ago. "Now you can visit these places-along with many other planets and moons-in Google Maps right from your computer".
