"President Ghani exchanged thoughts with Prime Minister Modi following the new U.S. Strategy, agreeing that the strategy is an opportunity for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan & South Asia; expansion of cooperation between the countries and the region", the Afghanistan Presidential twitter handle said shortly after the leaders met, referring to Washington's new policy of encouraging greater Indian involvement in Afghanistan's development.

"The secretary says he's also pushing Pakistan to deny safe haven to the Taliban and other terrorist groups", NPR's Michele Kelemen, who's traveling with Tillerson, tells our Newscast unit.

"Pakistan needs to, I think, take a clear-eyed view of the situation that they're confronted with in terms of the number of terrorist organizations that find safe haven inside of Pakistan", Tillerson said after concluding the talks.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi yesterday reconfirmed Pakistan's commitment to the "war on terror" during a meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying his country had "produced results" fighting the region's Islamist militants.

"I think the USA has made it clear in terms of our support for Afghanistan, support for a sovereign, unified, and democratic Afghanistan, charting a path to peace, prosperity, and self-reliance".

Pakistan is accused of publicly supporting the USA -led global mission in Afghanistan but secretly providing support and shelter to the Taliban as well as its dread ally, the Haqqani network.

"So, our relationship with Pakistan will also be conditions-based".

Tillerson, who is on a week-long trip that began in Saudi Arabia and will also take him to Pakistan and India, arrived without public announcement due to security concerns. In the meeting, Modi reiterated India's support for a negotiated political reconciliation in Afghanistan that is Afghan- led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled.

However, the recent rescue by Pakistan Army and intelligence agencies of an American-Canadian couple somewhat eased simmering tensions between the two countries.

During the visit, the Afghan President will meet his Indian counterpart Ram Nath Kovind and will hold delegation-level talks with Modi during which a gamut of bilateral ties will be discussed.
