United States bombers, fighters, stage show of force off North Korean coast

Donald Trump To Speak In 'Tough Terms' About North Korea In First UN Speech

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

At his UN address on Tuesday, President Trump warned the North Korean leader that the United States, if threatened, would destroy the country of 26 million people. Nuclear weapons are the most powerful devices ever developed by human beings.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin unveiled a new round of US sanctions against North Korea Thursday, this time targeting banks that, he said, "enable this regime's economic activity".

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that it detected a magnitude 3.5 quake in the area of previous North Korean nuclear tests, but that it was unable to confirm whether the event was natural. "The quake is small enough to suspect that it could have been caused by a tunnel collapse, and satellite data shows there have been many landslides in the area since the nuclear test".

Kim's statement was unusual because it was written in the first person.

In a show of force Saturday, US Air Force bombers flew in global airspace over waters east of North Korea.

North Korea is estimated to have imported 6,000 barrels of refined petroleum daily from China in 2016 - the equivalent of almost 2.2 million in total for the entire year.

Mr Wang told the United Nations on Thursday that there should be no new nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula "whether it is in the North or the South". It also called Obama a "monkey".

North Korea is the likely topic of discussion when Trump holds separate talks later Thursday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in (jah-yihn) and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh AH'-bay). That suggests Kim could be trying to take a more statesmanlike path than his state media.

He also saluted China's central bank for what he said was a move to stop its banks from trading with North Korea.

Two days after threatening to "totally destroy" North Korea if that nation targets the United States or its allies, President Trump cracked a joke with the president of South Korea about Hillary Clinton's infamous description of his supporters as a "basket of deplorables".

Each Trump threat plays into this narrative.

Kim seemed to take umbrage that Trump was personally insulting him.

"I am now thinking hard about what response he could have expected when he allowed such eccentric words to trip off his tongue", Kim said.

The president assured those in attendance, without details, that he would defend the USA against any offensives launched by North Korea: "I can tell you one thing, you are protected, OK?"

'He has made unprecedented rude nonsense one has never heard from any of his predecessors.

Kim offered some unsolicited advice to Trump as well. He advised the president "to exercise prudence in selecting words and to be considerate of whom he speaks to when making a speech in front of the world".
