Outer Banks under tropical storm watch as Maria approaches

6 ways this hurricane season is different

Maria 11 am 92417

Meanwhile, after falling apart and regenerating, Hurricane Lee is still a Category 1 hurricane as of Sunday evening. The center of circulation is now moving over cooler waters left behind from Hurricane Irma, but re-strengthening is anticipated once it moves north of Irma's path. It also hammered the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos, a British overseas territory. It poses no threat to North America.

So by no means is this hurricane season done, and there will probably be another developing system to monitor in the Caribbean, and then perhaps across portions of the Gulf of Mexico and/or the Southeast U.S.in the first week of October. It could actually be increasing for parts of the East Coast.

High surf and unsafe rip currents generated by Maria will begin arriving on the Southeast coast this weekend.

Parts of far eastern North Carolina may see some fringe impacts and tropical storm conditions, while the entire East Coast of the United States will continue to see higher than usual surf along with plenty of rip currents through most of the upcoming week.

A mandatory evacuation for all visitors to Ocracoke Island will go into effect Monday at 5 a.m.as Hurricane Maria approaches North Carolina's coast. But there are some indications it may make a much closer pass, and at least a slight chance its eyewall could reach land.

Jose will temporarily block an area of high pressure over the eastern US from moving farther east.

A resident clears debris days after Hurricane Maria made landfall September 22 in Puerto Rico. High pressure will become the dominant weather feature in the wake of Jose, so we can look forward to a nice weekend to kick off the new season. The computer models have begun to show that Maria could track much closer to North Carolina and Virginia's coast than previously thought. By late Tuesday and Wednesday, Maria will be near the coast of North Carolina. "I think there will be some heavy surf along the coast, and maybe as you get towards the Outer Banks, there will be a bit of wind".

As Hurricane Maria continues moving northward, it's expected to gradually weaken.

Locally, we have two possible impacts from Maria we'll be watching.

Meanwhile, another named storm has formed in the Atlantic.
