He also said developing Nismo parts for the new Leaf wouldn't be much of a challenge - so it seems a Leaf with a sporty Nismo lip kit, a rear hatch spoiler, larger wheels and more is on the horizon.

Nissan on Wednesday launched a revamped version of its Leaf EV hatchback model, going head-to-head with Tesla Inc's Model 3 and hoping to blunt criticism of limited driving ranges undermining EVs' mass-market appeal. The electric motor found in the 2018 Nissan Leaf is actually identical to the outgoing model, but it does feature a more-powerful inverter. That puts it in the same class as the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3. Along with excellent aerodynamics, the styling - from the sleek silhouette to the car's "advanced expression" - evokes the exhilaration of driving an EV.

The exterior design of the new Leaf features low profile and includes a number of Nissan's unique design cues including the boomerang-shaped head light and front grille. "Each manufacturer is bringing a different customer into the market, and all of it builds together". The Leaf business started from chair Carlos Ghosn's $5-billion bet in 2009 that the world's next Ford Model T would be electric.

Faced with tighter global environmental regulations, most carmakers are investing heavily in the electric-car sector, sparking a ferocious race to create the next green vehicle.

The Japanese automaker is hoping to double or triple last year's annual sales of about 48,000 units.

The prior year, Nissan introduced a lower-priced S-trim version of the Leaf and began producing the vehicle in Smyrna and Sunderland, U.K.

Speaking of high-range batteries, the new Leaf will be offered in high-power extended-range format at a later date, although firm details of this model are still being ironed out.

Nissan will also fit the ProPILOT and ProPILOT Park systems, which both aim to make driving easier while on the go and when pulling into a parking space. According to this e-Pedal feature, you can use brakes and Accelerator at the same time with just one e-Pedal. The Leaf will slow to a halt and can hold itself steady on an incline without the need to depress a brake pedal, of which one is included for emergency or aggressive braking. Tony Seba, an expert on technological evolutions, who teaches at Stanford University, says the gas engine vehicles may go the way of film cameras before the advent of digital photography and old-style phones before the arrival of smartphones.

The unveiling comes as the company's 7,000-strong workforce is today (Thursday, September 7) awarded the Freedom of the City of Sunderland, in recognition of its role in supporting Nissan's significant impact on the region's economy and the national auto industry.
