Trump addresses leaders at UN as nuclear weapon ban treaty dawns

Nepal to sign Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

More than 40 countries signed the treaty during a high level signing ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters in NY.

World powers that possess nuclear weapons refrain from attending a ceremony at the United Nations to sign a long-anticipated treaty on banning nukes, merely arguing that the pact will not work.

Speaking after the ceremony, Onyeama said Nigeria signed the treaty because right from the early 60s, Nigeria has been a strong advocate for nuclear weapons' prohibition and also, non proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Its Foreign Affairs secretary, Alan Peter Cayateno, issued the call after recently signing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, a legally binding agreement which was adopted by 121 member-states in July.

"There remain some fifteen thousand nuclear weapons in existence".

It was opened for signature by United Nations member states starting on September 20 during the annual General Assembly and would enter into legal force 90 days after being ratified by 50 countries.

Seven decades after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan during World War II - the only use of nuclear weapons - there are believed to be about 15,000 of them in the world today.

In signing the Treaty, the Philippine government called on states with nuclear weapons to join the worldwide community in making the world a safer place. "But we need to do more to get the whole way there". During the August 9 memorial service in Nagasaki, the city's outspoken Mayor Tomihisa Taue criticized Abe's government for not joining the treaty, accusing it of making empty promises about achieving a nuclear-free world. But calling upon North Korea to act within a framework that deals with eliminating the nuclear weapons of all nations, rather than one that prohibits only the nuclear weapons of North Korea, might provide a useful path forward. The signing took place during the High Level Ceremony for the opening of the signing of the Treaty.

In a stark contrast to Ireland's stance, Nato said that the ban treaty is at odds with the existing nonproliferation and disarmament architecture.

Many world leaders have dedicated a portion of their speeches to the General Assembly this week to addressing the North Korean nuclear threat.

He urged national leaders to quickly ratify as well as sign the treaty.

But delays in getting eight more countries to ratify the treaty mean that it still has not entered into force.
